Crete
Crete is a large island with enough variety to shape very different holidays: historic harbour towns, archaeological sites, mountain landscapes and beach resorts all compete for your time. The best starting point is to choose an area, then explore it properly. Trying to cover the whole island on a short break can turn appealing days into long road journeys. Food, neighbourhood wandering and time beside the sea deserve as much space as the headline sights.

Find your own rhythm in Crete.
Knossos introduces the island's Minoan past through an important archaeological site outside Heraklion. Read about the site beforehand and allow time to understand what you are looking at. Chania Old Town offers a contrasting setting, with harbour views and streets shaped by successive periods of the town's history.
Rethymno Old Town brings another historic coastal centre, where lanes and squares reward a slower walk. These are separate destinations across the island, not a compact sightseeing circuit. Use them to decide whether your first stay should focus on western Crete, central Crete or a longer journey between bases.
How to enjoy your time here
For a shorter visit, pick one main region and mix sightseeing with beach or town days close to your accommodation. If changing bases, account for luggage, parking and the actual driving route. Public transport can suit some journeys, but check the services for your own plans. Mountain walks and remote beaches need their own current access and conditions research.

Walking & access planning
We have not yet added a destination-specific official access resource to this guide. This does not mean the destination is unsuitable. Ask the accommodation, transport operator and each attraction about the exact access features you need.
A guide or accessible feature does not establish access for the whole trip. Confirm doorways, steps, gradients, walking distances, bathrooms, lifts, transfers and any assistance directly with the relevant provider.
