Kefalonia

Kefalonia is an island of sweeping bays, green hills and villages that encourage a slower kind of exploration. Its scenery is a major attraction, but distances and winding roads mean you will enjoy it more by choosing a sensible base than by chasing a new corner every day. A holiday here can alternate between a memorable beach, a small harbour and a leisurely meal, with plenty of room for the island landscape along the way.

A closer look

Find your own rhythm in Kefalonia.

Myrtos Beach is the dramatic coastal headline, framed by steep slopes and best approached with time to appreciate both the view and the conditions at the shore. Assos offers a contrasting village setting around a small waterfront, with colourful houses and a more intimate scale.

Melissani Cave adds a different natural experience through its lake-cave setting. These are distinct outings with journeys between them, so avoid treating them as quick consecutive stops. Use one as the main focus of a day and add nearby places only when the route and your energy allow.

How to enjoy your time here

Choose accommodation around the part of Kefalonia you most want to explore, accounting for your arrival port or airport. Allow more time for drives than the map's straight-line distances suggest. Confirm visiting arrangements for the cave and current beach access before setting out. A longer stay is best spent enjoying a few areas properly, rather than packing every day with cross-island journeys.

Make the plan fit your party

Solo travellers can start with one main activity and time to explore. Couples can keep a free evening in the plan. Families can build in shorter outings and breaks. Groups should agree a few shared priorities and check room and transport arrangements together.

Walking & access planning

We have not yet added a destination-specific official access resource to this guide. This does not mean the destination is unsuitable. Ask the accommodation, transport operator and each attraction about the exact access features you need.

A guide or accessible feature does not establish access for the whole trip. Confirm doorways, steps, gradients, walking distances, bathrooms, lifts, transfers and any assistance directly with the relevant provider.
