Santorini

Santorini is defined by its volcanic landscape: white buildings cling to the caldera rim, while other parts of the island offer beaches and a different pace. The famous views are a good reason to visit, but they are only one part of planning a stay. A caldera village and a beach base give you quite different routines, access and surroundings. Choose the setting you want to live in, rather than booking from a photograph alone.

A closer look

Find your own rhythm in Santorini.

Oia is known for its caldera-side village setting and the views between its closely packed buildings. Allow time to walk beyond the most photographed corners and be prepared to share the popular routes. Fira offers another perspective on the rim, with streets, shops and places to stop overlooking the volcanic scenery.

Akrotiri Archaeological Site adds a different layer: an ancient settlement preserved through the island's volcanic history. It is a useful contrast to a day spent pursuing viewpoints. Put these visits on separate parts of your itinerary if you want time to appreciate them.

How to enjoy your time here

Check steps, luggage access and the exact position of any caldera accommodation, particularly if mobility or carrying bags is a concern. Plan transfers and local journeys before fixing multiple timed activities. Keep some flexibility for coastal or boat plans and confirm operator arrangements. A few well-chosen experiences generally make a more comfortable visit than trying to reach every viewpoint in one day.

Three places for your shortlist. Check current access, opening arrangements and suitability before making firm plans.

A sensible starting point

Make the trip work for you.

Choose your base

Compare caldera villages and beach areas; they offer different bases and journeys.

Build a manageable route

Use Oia as one anchor for your plans, then decide how Fira and Akrotiri Archaeological Site fit the time you have. Group nearby stops and leave room for meals and the journeys between them.

Compare the whole cost

Add accommodation, travel, local transport and your chosen activities before comparing options. Read the room details and cancellation terms, and check what any package includes.

Make the plan fit your party

Solo travellers can start with one main activity and time to explore. Couples can keep a free evening in the plan. Families can build in shorter outings and breaks. Groups should agree a few shared priorities and check room and transport arrangements together.

Walking & access planning

We have not yet added a destination-specific official access resource to this guide. This does not mean the destination is unsuitable. Ask the accommodation, transport operator and each attraction about the exact access features you need.

A guide or accessible feature does not establish access for the whole trip. Confirm doorways, steps, gradients, walking distances, bathrooms, lifts, transfers and any assistance directly with the relevant provider.
