Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki is a waterfront city with a strong appetite for food, conversation and long evenings out. Its history appears in Byzantine churches, Roman remains and Ottoman-era traces, while cafés and contemporary neighbourhoods keep it firmly in the present. The seafront gives you an easy starting point, but the upper streets reveal another side of the city. It suits travellers who enjoy culture without building every day around a ticketed attraction.

A closer look

Find your own rhythm in Thessaloniki.

Start at the White Tower, the city's familiar waterfront landmark, then follow the promenade to get a feel for the sea-facing centre. Aristotelous Square brings broad views and a natural place to pause between walks and food stops.

Ano Poli, the upper town, changes the scale: smaller streets, older houses and elevated outlooks reward a slower wander. Treat the climb as part of the experience and allow time to stop. Together, these areas offer a useful introduction to the city's contrast between open waterfront spaces and more intimate hillside neighbourhoods.

How to enjoy your time here

Spend separate parts of your stay on the waterfront and in the upper town instead of repeatedly moving between them. Choose accommodation with your preferred walking routes and evening plans in mind. A food-led afternoon can be as rewarding as another museum stop, so keep some time unallocated. Check the route and gradient before assuming every part of the city is equally easy on foot.

Walking & access planning

We have not yet added a destination-specific official access resource to this guide. This does not mean the destination is unsuitable. Ask the accommodation, transport operator and each attraction about the exact access features you need.

A guide or accessible feature does not establish access for the whole trip. Confirm doorways, steps, gradients, walking distances, bathrooms, lifts, transfers and any assistance directly with the relevant provider.
